Dori's Story

Speech & Language Pathologist

Doris smiles in her office, with a stack of games/tools used during services behind herSeveral years ago Dori, a Speech and Language Pathologist – Clinical Fellow with Easterseals Massachusetts (ESMA), felt like something was missing from her well-established career in the technology sector.  While Dori enjoyed her job, she ultimately wanted do something to help people and give back to her community.  Dori decided to make the change and went back to school to complete her degree in Speech and Language Pathology. She knew this would allow her to help people find their voices and to be able to communicate with others.

According to Dori, she believes “everyone has a voice and communication is core to being able to connect with people.  Communication helps them to live, learn, work, and play.”

When Dori first applied to ESMA after graduating, she was unsure of exactly where her passion was within the extensive field that is Speech and Language Pathology.  This is where ESMA has truly benefited Dori as the variety of school contracts she has experienced over the last year has provided glimpses into the unique and endless possibilities that ESMA has to offer.  Upon completion of her Clinical Fellow Year (CFY) this Spring, Dori is looking forward to working in other settings including day habilitation programs and skilled nursing facilities.  She looks forward to further expanding her clinical knowledge and having a positive impact on the clients that she helps.

Doris, SLP, smiles in her office, with a stack of games/tools used during services behind herIn order to ensure therapists feel comfortable in their contracts, ESMA provides outstanding support to staff.  According to Dori, this has been the best aspect working at ESMA.

“I have a supervisor that gives me the perfect balance of independence and support.  With SLP being a second career for me, I feel confident to do a lot things independently but I also know that I have a team behind me offering any and all of the support that I may need.”

This high level of support continues with the ability to bounce ideas off of other SLPs as well.  Regular monthly team meetings provide Dori with the opportunity to collaborate with other SLPs.  This collaborative atmosphere can also be seen throughout the other disciplines and departments within ESMA allowing therapists to continue to grow as clinicians.

“I know that I have a lot to learn still and Easterseals Massachusetts has a lot to offer to expand my knowledge base.”
