Easter Seals Massachusetts has won a $25,000 grant from the Comcast Foundation to expand its services for children and adults with complex communication challenges.
The grant will fund the Augmentative and Alternative Communication Boot Camp in August, a professional development course geared to individuals who work with students using augmentative and alternative communication devices. Other workshops and conferences are in the planning stages.
The funds also will support ongoing training for Easter Seals’ nationally known Augmentative and Alternative Communication specialists, and will increase the number of communication devices available for trial use through the Easter Seals Assistive Technology Device Loan program.
The growing availability of mobile devices, tablets and apps offers increased opportunities for people with communication challenges, but it also brings an increased need for clear guidance in selecting and customizing them for individuals,” Easter Seals President Kirk Joslin said. Thanks to the generosity of the Comcast Foundation, this technology will empower more people with communication needs to reach their full potential.”
Assistive technologies can greatly improve the lives of people with disabilities by helping them to overcome barriers at home, work, school and in their community,” said Charisse R. Lillie, vice president of community investment at Comcast Corporation and president of the Comcast Foundation. We are proud to support Easter Seals Massachusetts through this grant and make a positive impact, one person at a time.”
The Massachusetts organization is one of only five Easter Seals affiliates nationwide to win the grant. The funds came from the Comcast Assistive Technology Grant Fund at Easter Seals.
