Corissa's Story

Student Service Aide Success

Corissa, SSA, smiles with a purple hoodie onCorissa, who currently works as a Student Service Aide (SSA) at Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children (PRHC), has always sought a career involved in helping others. Prior to working as a SSA, Corissa worked as a Personal Care Aide, providing support and care for clients in their homes, as well as in a Day Habilitation program assisting individuals with disabilities. These experiences solidified Corissa’s desire to pursue a career in human services, and she soon began employment with Easterseals Massachusetts (ESMA) as an SSA, supporting students with disabilities in the school setting.

Corissa loves working with the students and making a difference in their everyday lives. As a mother of three children, she understands the need to nurture, as well as promote the learning process. She not only provides one-on-one support, she also helps to foster social experiences for the students. For example, she has chaperoned the PRHC prom and helped with all the prom preparations, including doing make-up, hair, and nails. The best part of being an SSA is “giving our students the typical high school experience, through graduation and prom.”

Corissa’s advice for new paraprofessionals would be to “approach every day with an open mind.”
