JUSTIN

Like many teens nearing the end of high school, Justin couldn’t wait to graduate and go on to college.

Justin faces significant challenges involving his speech, head movements, and arm and hand movements.  He had done well in high school but his parents were concerned that the school hadn’t done enough to prepare him for the demands of college.

As a result, Justin’s high school agreed to underwrite a year of transitional services for his freshman year in college.  After an extensive search, they brought in Easterseals.

Easterseals Transitional Services Director Lisa Sirois worked with Justin, his family and the disability services office at his college to develop a plan.  Justin was part of the process in hiring a tutor and a transition assistant, and has learned to direct the assistant himself.

Lisa also called in Easterseals Assistive Technology Specialist Kevin Berner to find technology that would help Justin succeed as a college student.

Justin is very determined and has many skills, but he was understandably anxious during his first semester.  Getting through it empowered him.  He now has his sights set on transferring to a residential college and majoring in sports management.

Lisa is currently working on involving Justin with the Easterseals Youth Leadership Network, a program she also directs.  The network gives teens and young adults with disabilities opportunities to develop leadership skills, broaden their horizons and make new friends.

She’s also thinking of a summer internship that would provide Justin with some valuable job skills.

“People don’t realize that Easterseals offers such a wide range of services,” Lisa said.  “We’re willing and able to be innovative to meet the specific needs of each individual client.”
