Cheryl's Story

Cheryl has a flair and passion for art. Cheryl is a participant in Residential Services - one of several Living Options offered by Easterseals Southern California (ESSC). She had always expressed an interest in art according to Residential Services, Sabrina Godinez.

"I have worked with Cheryl for many years and we found that she really enjoyed creating art with markers on paper and our staff has worked with her to support this passion, taking her shopping for supplies," Sabrina said.

Individuals supported by our Residential Services have typically spent most of their lives in state-run developmental centers but have transitioned to community-based living in an ESSC house in local communities. Residents are provided with 24 hours, seven-days-a-week, 365-days a year support from trained Easterseals associates, medical and behavioral professionals.

About eight years ago, ESSC associates helped Cheryl branch out into new media, introducing her to paint and canvas. "Cheryl definitely has a very unique technique and use of color.  All of her paintings are different from each other and she is very specific about what colors she wants to use for each one," said Sabrina.

Cheryl recently exhibited in her first official art show through BUILD Industries in Burbank, which offers adult day programs for developmentally disabled adults. Cheryl expressed that she was very happy to show her work to everybody. Not only did she show her work, she also sold her first piece!
