WorkFirst is a CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) certified division of Easter Seals Southern California that provides one-on-one, customized employment support services to individuals who are interested in finding and maintaining paid work or starting their own business.  WorkFirst identifies each person’s talents, interests, goals and abilities in order to support him or her to find a job or business venture that can be fulfilling long-term. 

WorkFirst helps people enhance their economic self-sufficiency, self-esteem and participation in the community.

Guiding Principles of WorkFirst:

  • Ensure employment for people with disabilities,
  • Decrease the demand for State-funded services,
  • Stimulate the economy by adding people to the workforce
  • Improve the quality of life in our communities.
  • Workfirst also provides employment support for veterans with or without a disability through the Bob Hope Veteran's Support Program.

    Job Seeker Services:

    Customized Employment (individual placement only, no contract work, no subminimum wage):

    According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Customized Employment may include employment developed through job carving, self-employment or entrepreneurial initiatives, or other job development or restructuring strategies that result in job responsibilities being customized and individually negotiated to fit the needs of individuals with a disability. Our service assists job seekers with finding jobs tailored to his or her unique talents. This may include a job carved out to suit specific abilities, self-employment, or entrepreneurship.

  • Pairs the job seeker with a Vocational Specialist who assesses talents, strengths and abilities
  • Works on interview skills, resume building, benefi ts planning and the development of personal network
  • Provides coaching as needed to master job skills
  • Situational Assessment Services (Job Trial)*:

    Work sites in the community are used to give individuals the opportunity to try out a job on a short-term basis to help determine his or her strengths and barriers to gaining employment. Opportunities include:

    Work history, transferable skills, transportation and technology needs are also reviewed and assessed to further support employment efforts.

    Direct Placement:

    Direct Placement supports individuals to get a job that meets his or her ideal employment conditions by: 

    Personal, Vocational and Social Adjustment Services (PVSA)*

    PVSA Services help individuals overcome barriers that may be keeping him or her from getting a job or being successful at a current place of employment by providing: 

    Microenterprise Development

    The Association for Enterprise Opportunity (AEO) defines a microenterprise as a business with five or fewer employees, requiring $35,000 or less in initial capital. These businesses may be relatively small, but they are making a very large difference when it comes to job creation. Microenterprise Development assists individuals with creating a step-by-step plan to build and run his or her own business by providing:

    Additional Program Details:

    Frequency: Varies based on individual need, and may be provided as seldom as twice a month, or as often as daily.

    Setting: Services are provided within the local communities of the individuals who we serve.

    Funding and Referral Sources: WorkFirst currently works with the California Department of Rehabilitation and the following Regional Centers:

    Fees: Typically services are funded through the agencies listed above, and there is no fee to the individual

    Service Providers: All services are provided directly, however referrals to outside agencies, or generic community resources are provided as needed.
