Cathy and Robert Transition to Independent Living

Gaining a new level of independence, clients Robert Russo and Cathy Aschenbrenner (pictured standing and sitting in photo on right) transitioned from a licensed residential home to their own apartment where they are responsible for paying the rent and utilities, taking public transportation, doing laundry, and grocery shopping, with support from Easter Seals Supported Living Service staff.

Typically, the Supported Living Services supports one client at their residence, but Cathy and Robert have a special bond that was developed after living together for 10 years at an Easter Seals residential home.  Cathy and Robert had previously lived at a developmental center for many years together. Their families asked if they could move in together.

With financial assistance from the Westside Regional Center, Easter Seals coordinated for the apartment to be modified to meet Cathy and Robert’s needs.

“Supported Living was a great opportunity for them,” said Linda Hudson, Supported Living Service Program Director, adding that the two roommates now live in a gated community, which has walking paths, and is located near parks, shopping centers and restaurants.  “It was our goal to keep them together and their families are very pleased.”

Hudson, along with Easter Seals staff who all worked with Cathy and Robert at their previous residence, also will continue to support the pair, adding to the success of the move.

“Cathy and Robert are doing really well in their new home,” said Guadalupe Trevizo-Reinoso, VP, Easter Seals Living Options. “We could not be more excited as a team to support them in the least restrictive living environment.”
