Adult Day Services Help Nicole Leave Bullying Behind

Coach Jennifer (L) and Nicole (R).

Adult Day Services client Nicole Clifton was bullied in high school because she has autism. Nicole then became a bully to others with disabilities.  However Nicole was able to break the cycle with support from her Life Skills Coach Jennifer Williams.   The past year has been a learning experience for both of them.

Coach Jennifer (on left in photo) immediately realized that Nicole (on right) didn’t like being around people with disabilities.

“Nicole had some really bad and challenging behaviors,” Jennifer said. “She talked down to other participants and made derogatory remarks.  She didn’t want to be around anyone else, especially people with visible disabilities. She also refused to be involved in any activities.”

As Jennifer got to know Nicole she learned the root of why Nicole behaved poorly. “Nicole was bullied in high school because she is autistic.” Since Nicole’s disability was not immediately visible she could isolate herself and not be judged. She then judged others with a visible disability because hers was not.

Jennifer worked with Nicole to help her gain the understanding that she was doing to others what had been done to her.  Thanks to the persistence of her coach, Nicole was able to change her outlook and behavior.

“A year later, Nicole is a whole different individual. She now helps others and shows them respect.  She joins in social gatherings and interacts with everyone.  She also volunteers and does her work independently,” Jennifer said.

Among Nicole’s volunteer activities is working in the history department at a local library.  She scans and uploads archival photos and post cards from the city’s past.  Her goal is to ultimately find a job.
