Playing at the beach, exploring hiking trails, and visiting waterparks are just a few of the fun outdoor activities our Child Development Services Early Head Start (a home-based) Program in Escondido is doing with the families they serve to encourage them to lead healthier lifestyles.
At the beginning of the year, program teachers got input from parents about their goals, and many families expressed an interest in living a healthier lifestyle.
During their weekly home visits, teachers offer parents suggestions about activities they can do to promote all developmental domains, including better health. "We share healthy recipes and encourage families to go for afternoon walks together or go to the neighborhood park," said Elizabeth Gonzalez, Early Childhood Educator.
Twice a month, teachers, families, and children come together during a socializing event. Instead of meeting in conference rooms, families and staff have opted to meet at outside venues such as the beach or the park where children can run around and play. They have also sought out local hiking trails where they take walks as a group.
The families are greatly enjoying these activities and see the value in making an effort to get out of the house, unplug from their electronic devices, and get active in the great outdoors.
