L to R: Treasurer Charles Slemaker, Vice President Valeria Hernandez, President Andres Cabrera, and Secretary Jorge Urey
Individuals at Adult Day Services in the San Fernando Valley have created a self-advocacy group to more fully take control of their lives, by making their own life decisions and speaking up for themselves.
One recent meeting featured a presentation about healthy eating and nutrition. Individuals who participated received great information about healthy food and portion sizes to help them make nutritious and informed choices about what they choose to eat.
“Participants in our self-advocacy group discover that it is fun as well as empowering,” said Program Director Cynthia Fernandez. “It also supports Easter Seals’ purpose to ensure that all people with disabilities or special needs have an equal opportunity to live, learn, work and play in their communities.”
Each month’s topic is planned by the groups elected officers. Other people at ADS are also welcome to attend and share suggestions, opinions, or request speakers.
There are currently four officers in charge of the Self-Advocacy Group:
President: Andres Cabrera
Vice President: Valeria Hernandez
Secretary: Jorge Urey
And Treasurer Charles Slemaker
“I am a shy person, but acting as president is easy because of the help I get from my friends in the group,” said Andres.
Of the 64 individuals at the San Fernando Valley location, approximately 20-30 are active participants in the Self-Advocacy group.
Past topics have included letter writing campaigns to the state legislature in support of funding increases for services, and a cultural awareness session about Dia de los Muertos that included support of the City Council’s event in Pacoima.
Rosa Felix
Last term’s treasurer, Rosa Felix, said that her favorite part of the position was being able to increase her skills in money management and budgeting, because she also uses them in her personal life. When asked if she would like to be treasurer again, she replied that she would “welcome the nomination.”
