During the six years Gerardo has been a participant with Easterseals Adult Day Services, it has been clear he is a man on a mission towards greater independence. Active with the participant-led Advocacy Group in the San Fernando Valley, he expresses his determination to live life as he chooses and help others do the same.
His recent proposal to Easterseals participant Valeria at an adult services holiday party after 18 months of dating has assured him a partner in the journey towards achieving his vision for the future.
The couple met while working as volunteers at a local Thrift Store where they helped with inventory organization and price ticketing as part of the regularly scheduled activities Easterseals day service offers to participants. They quickly found they have common interests and enjoy participating in leisure activities together and taking trips with their families.
When asked about his fiancée, Gerardo said “l like that Valeria is smart and beautiful. Her beauty comes from within. She comforts me and calms me down when I am upset. She is my angel!”
Regarding his decision to propose, Gerardo replied “I decided to give Valeria a ring as a promise of my commitment to her, and what I want in the future. I wanted to show her my love and that I will always be there for her and be faithful to her.”
Shocked and surprised when Gerardo gave her the ring, Valeria responded by simply saying “Yes”.
Describing Gerardo as “honest, loving and caring,” Valeria added that, “I love it when Gerardo texts me every morning and calls me my love. He shows me that he cares.”
Gerardo recently moved from his parent’s house into a residential home with support from the team at Easterseals. This was a first step forward towards getting his own apartment and an eventual job.
Valeria also plans to continue with Easterseals where she has made significant progress developing vocational skills, building friendships, and exploring the local community. She aims to secure employment at a daycare or preschool in the near future as she enjoys working with children.
“I always wanted for my daughter to experience all the happy moments life has to offer,” said Valeria’s mom Anita Cervantes. “I’m happy for both of them and we will always support her on any decision she makes. What a romantic gesture on Gerardo’s behalf.”
Gerardo’s mom, Terri De La Cerda said, “Meeting Valeria opened up a new world for him. He knows what true love is and it not only fills me with such warmth but it gives me hope for his future as a husband and a father. He has so much love to give. Gerardo and Valeria are an example that love transcends all and I can't wait to see their future as man and wife!”
The couple plan to marry within the next few years so they can live together and start a family.
