Life Skills Coach Lizette Mendez and her Adult Day Services group Rene Otero, Alfredo Marquez and Florenico Pinedo (pictured left) volunteer Monday through Friday at Salazar Park in Whittier. The group is affectionately called the “Busy Bees” because they are always so busy. They start off the day by socializing with the seniors, who they have built friendships with over time. The seniors will ask for the volunteers by name if they are out for the day. “This shows they truly are a part of the community and are seen for all the wonderful work they do,” says Program Director Lorena Martinez.
The group’s duties include watering the flowers, raking, and picking up trash near the garden. Although it’s not part of their volunteer assignment you will often find them venturing off to clean-up the rest of the park.
The volunteer work has had a positive impact on the participants as well. Program attendance has greatly improved and one of the individuals with limited speech is speaking with greater frequency. Lorena says they have also improved their work readiness skills, as well as their social skills.
Last June, the group received a Certificate of Recognition for the volunteer work at Salazar Park from Assembly Majority Leader, 58th District Charles M. Calderon. Recently they were invited to a recognition luncheon at Ruby’s.
“Having the ‘Busy Bees’ at Salazar Park has been a positive learning experience for them as well as for us,” says Salazar Park Recreational Service Leader Anna Solis.
