Vera Dennis’ Story: A Home Away from Home

Ms. Vera StoryVera Dennis is a participant at the Easterseals Adult Day Service (ADS) in Silver Spring. She started attending our center after being diagnosed in 2016 with semantic dementia – a form of dementia that causes a loss of semantic memory over time.

Vera’s daughter, Robin, never questioned for a moment whether her mother was going to live with her. However, she did question how she was going to make it work. Then she remembered that Easterseals, which has an adult day services program, was around the corner from her church and en route to her job. They came for a visit in September 2016 and by October, Vera started attending the center regularly.

“The staff is professional, loving and supportive, and the daily activities are diverse and engaging. My mom looks forward to attending ‘her home away from home’ daily. Being a participant brings her such joy as she interacts with the staff, the children at the daycare and the weekly guest visitors. Her contributions are valued and she enjoys helping others when needed. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, my mom has still been able to participate in daily Zoom meetings with other participants, the ADS staff and other Easterseals’ service providers. My mom may not be able to be physically be around her friends and the staff, but she enjoys getting to see them and enjoys the virtual activities they organize. Additionally, each day an Easterseals’ staff member calls to check-in on both of us. They make a positive difference in my mom’s life, as well as me and my family.”
