Easterseals Southern California and the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge Celebrate Pride Month

Check out this playlist of films that feature the intersectionality of these communities!

May 26, 2023

This year's Easterseals Disability Film Challenge was notable for several reasons. It not only celebrated its 10th anniversary of giving filmmakers—with and without disabilities—the opportunity to collaborate on telling unique stories that showcase disability in its many forms, this year it also achieved a record 115 film submissions, quite the milestone!

The Easterseals Disability Film Challenge has provided disabled talent and aspiring filmmakers a chance to showcase their work and establish meaningful opportunities over the past decade. You can learn more about these stories of success on the film challege website.

We are so proud of all the diversity within these films. As we approach the summertime duo of LGBTQ+ Pride Month in June, and Disability Pride Month in July, we thought this would be the perfect time to showcase some of the films that highlight both disability and LGBTQ+ representation. As you celebrate this month, take a few moments to watch the "EDFC Celebrates Pride Month" Youtube playlist below.

As both groups work towards more inclusivity and equity, while sharing pride with our society at large, it is critical to recognize the intersectionality of the disability and LGBTQ+ communities. To quote American writer and civil rights activist Audre Lorde, "There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle, because we do not live single-issue lives."

As Victoria Rodríguez-Roldán wrote in her article "The Intersection Between Disability and LGBT Discrimination and Marginalization," in the American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law: “It is evident that disability issues disproportionately impact LGBTQ+ individuals. This, along with the broader intersections between disability, race, gender, and other marginalized backgrounds, must be a centerpiece in any form of advocacy involving the disability and LGBTQ+ communities and movements.”
