Fruit Strips

A Healthier Twist on a Childhood Favorite!

Fruit StripsLooking for a fun, healthy, and budget-saving activity for the kids this weekend? Make homemade fruit strips just like the kind we used to roll-up! Use up those almost-expired fruits, add a splash of honey or maple syrup, and watch your little ones enjoy a tasty, nutritious treat. Plus, it's a great way to introduce them to healthy snacks and spark nostalgic memories for parents. Fruit is packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and no added sugars. Honey and maple syrup provide some antioxidants and health benefits of their own. Together this snack supports a happy tummy and helps prevent those blood sugar spikes and dips you might experience after eating a piece of cake or your favorite candy bar, which is likely to have more sugar and fewer other nutrients. Let's get rolling!

Fruit Strips

Yields: 8 servings Prep time: 5 minutes Cook Time: 5-6 hours Total time: 5-6 hours and 5 minutes

Ingredients:

🍓 3 cups fruit*
🍓 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
Note: If using frozen fruit make sure it is defrosted by running under warm water in a strainer and then pat the fruit dry.

Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 170 degrees.
2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
3. Cut large fruit, or any large pieces of fruit such as whole strawberries into smaller pieces.
4. Place the fruit and honey (or maple syrup) into a blender or food processor, and puree until completely smooth. You may still see some whole seeds depending on the type of fruit that you use, but that is okay because it’s fiber!
5. Pour the mixture onto a prepared baking sheet and spread it evenly with a spatula into a thin rectangle; it can be a bit thicker on the edges since they’ll dry out first. Tap the pan on the counter to level the edges.
6. Place in the oven for about 6 hours, cooking time may vary depending on your oven. Rotate the pan every hour or so until the center is no longer wet, sticky, or tacky. It takes some time to get there!
7. Remove from the oven and let it cool completely.
8. Use scissors, a knife, or a pizza cutter to cut into eight strips. The parchment paper will help prevent the fruit strips from sticking during storage and when you unravel to enjoy! Place in a Ziplock or sealed container for up to a week.
