Candid Conversations: Disability Employment - the Battle for Equal Opportunity and Access

On October 13th, we were pleased to host a Candid Conversations event in honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month. During this webinar, we not only discussed the challenges unemployed individuals with disabilities face, but also the critical resources that are available to help them cope during the pandemic. The panel also provided terrific guidance for creating inclusive work environments, including how to ensure career recruitment sites are accessible to everyone.

This conversation was moderated by Kristen Berset-Harris of WUSA9’s Great Day Washington and joined by Laurie Armstrong, Ticket to Work Manager at Easterseals Disability Staffing Network; Judith (Judy) Heumann, Disability Rights Activist and Author; Meg O’Connell, Founder & CEO of Global Disability Inclusion; and Eric Wright, Senior Lead Technologist at Booz Allen Hamilton.

At Easterseals, we understand how difficult it has been for the community with disabilities to continue to progress in finding meaningful employment during this time. However, we want you to know that we are still here, and there are still a lot of available resources out there to help you navigate through these challenging times.

The Easterseals Disability Staffing Network (EDSN) is still assigning tickets and providing employment support services to existing clients. During the pandemic, we have also been researching trends in employment opportunities and have been providing job leads. We were able to help clients successfully obtain positions at warehouses, grocery stores and security positions at COVID sites.

As for job search assistance, EDSN continues to assist clients with online applications, resumes, assessments, onboarding and transportation. We have steadily rebuilt a consistent monthly increase in ticketholders and ticket payments, and we plan to continue to assist in finding employment opportunities for our clients in competitive and safe work environments.
