Autism Statement from Easterseals Southern California

A call-out of recent misinformation regarding autism spectrum disorder.

IRVINE, CA, May 8, 2025

Easterseals Southern California (ESSC) is the largest provider of autism services in California and one of the largest nationwide, currently serving more than 20,000 children and adults with behavior (ABA), speech, occupational and physical therapies and social skills support, all proven to be effective in increasing the proficiencies of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and similar disabilities.

Misinformation about ASD is not helpful.  It neither supports the autism community, nor does it educate the public with facts.

Referring to newly released CDC data showing that one of every 31 children aged 8 in the U.S. has been diagnosed with ASD, recent statements at the federal level have called autism an “epidemic" that "destroys families” and “a preventable disease.”  Such unfounded comments perpetuate harmful stereotypes not backed by science, including that autism is caused by vaccines or other environmental conditions.

“Autism is a neurodevelopmental variation with many contributing factors, including genetics,” says Dr. Paula Pompa-Craven, PsyD, Chief Clinical Officer, ESSC Autism Services. “It is not a disease, an epidemic or a condition that can be prevented. Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning that people who are diagnosed have a broad range of abilities and talents. Many on the spectrum excel in school and other areas of endeavor, earn degrees, launch careers or businesses, create friendships, have families and positively contribute to their communities. The higher rate of diagnoses most likely correlates to increased awareness, better diagnostic criteria and wider access to care.”

Easterseals has served thousands of individuals with autism and their families for decades. It is clear that autistic people have individual strengths and challenges and that early diagnosis and support are key to helping people live their lives with quality and meaning.  We see it every day.
