Community Living FAQs

What does Community Living at Easterseals Midwest look like and where would my loved one live?

•    Residents live in regular homes and neighborhoods, and we help them make connections within their communities. Our staff members work hard to ensure that homes in our Community Living program are well-maintained and part of the neighborhood. There are typically two or three program participants living in each house.

What supports are provided in Community Living?

•    Our staff members collaborate with families, schools, employers, friends, and all of the people involved in the individual’s life to develop a plan that fits their needs. Skills we commonly focus on are socialization, medication management, personal hygiene, recreation, cleaning, cooking and nutrition, budgeting, banking, and accessing transportation.

What makes Easterseals Midwest's Community Living unique?

•    We have a dedicated team of clinicians, music and behavioral therapists, a dietician, and nursing personnel who supplement programs and services. Behavior therapists participate in the planning process for each of our residents — they design an individual behavior plan for each resident, and provide behavior consultation as needed. Our operations staff is available and on call around the clock to respond to behavioral and medical crises.

How is Community Living funded?

•    24-hour support can be extremely expensive. Funding for your family member can be provided through the Department of Mental Health Medicaid Waiver program. Community Living services may also be privately paid.

Where do I begin?

•    Planning an independent living experience for your family member can be a lengthy process. We encourage families to start planning a few years ahead during their annual IEP or PCP process. Waiting until you are unable to care for your family member can often come too late. If you are not receiving case management services through the St. Louis Regional Office, please contact the Missouri Department of Mental Health.
