Mental health disabilities are common in the United States. Nearly one in five U.S. adults live with a mental health disability (52.9 million in 2020). One in six U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health condition, like anxiety or depression. But only half receive any mental health services.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and mental health is an incredibly important part of overall health.
To increase awareness and bust the stigma around mental health, Easterseals Michigan has created the Mental Health IS Health campaign. Our campaign focuses on the week of May 9 to serve as a Mental Health Awareness Week. Following is a calendar of events that are already taking place; however, we encourage you and your team/family/group/etc. to get creative for what works for your team building activity!
May 9: Mindfulness Monday The Blue Cross Virtual Wellbeing Team from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network is hosting a guided meditation beginning at 12:00 p.m. This 30-minute meditation will put you at ease and be nothing short of fun. May 10: Take-A-Walk-Tuesday Join Cindy and Marissa from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network – Blue Cross Virtual Wellbeing Team for a 30-minute walk. At 12:30 p.m. connect with nature, explore mindfulness, and learn how to improve your overall well-being. May 11: Wind-Down Wednesday Easterseals Michigan has the honor to be the Nonprofit of the Night at the Detroit Tigers game on Wednesday, May 11. Our Mental Health IS Health Campaign will be featured throughout the night. On May 11, simply text ESMI to phone number 56651. Follow the prompts to make and complete your donation. (All donations made on this day only will be matched, up to $10,000, by the Benoit Family). For every $1,000 raised for Easterseals Michigan, you and your organization can receive 10 tickets to attend the game with Easterseals Michigan. If you are interested in more information, please email Linda Kozinowski at lkozianowski@essmichigan.org as we have a limited number of tickets available. First pitch is slotted for 7:10 p.m. May 12: Team-Building Thursday Connect with a friend or co-worker in person, host a team-building activity or check out ideas in our free 40+ page resource guide.
