A Caregiver’s Guide to Unique Therapy Techniques for Women Veterans


July 30, 2015- 2015 Military Caregiving Webinar Series presented “A Caregiver’s Guide to Unique Therapy Techniques for Women Veterans”.  The webinar provided a brief overview of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Military Sexual Trauma (MST) as they relate to Women Veterans and discussion of emerging new therapy options. In addition, information regarding new therapy options, and other valuable resources for Caregivers of Women Veterans was presented.

Key presenter was Alicia Gill Rossiter, DNP, FNP, PNP‐BC, FAANP. Dr. Rossiter has been an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner for 18 years and recently retired Lt Col Rossiter from the United States Air Force Reserves as an Individual Mobilization Augmentee. In her civilian role, she is a faculty member and the Sequence Director of the Veteran to Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program at the University of South Florida College of Nursing.  Dr. Rossiter also serves as the University of South Florida (USF) College of Nursing (CON) Military Liaison and was instrumental in the development of the “Introduction to Military and Veteran Health” course.  Dr. Rossiter research focus is women veterans and military sexual trauma and military children and the effects of service on dependents.

Other presenters included Carol Harlow of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation (www.elizabethdolefoundation.org) who provided a brief overview and background of the organization. Caregiver James gave a wonderful perspective on caring for his wife Tita, Retired Navy (20 years) Second Class and the daily challenges he faces. The recording also includes Michelle Steffanelli, from theEaster Seals Serving DC | MD | VA Caregiver Support Program (www.caregiver.va.gov), who joined as a resource expert.
