For Caregivers: Top Tips to Take Care of YOU!

Respite care ideas for the caregiver

  • Build in time away from caregiving (including a vacation!)
  • Exercise regularly, taking a walk for 10-20 minutes a few times a week can make a difference
  • Accept assistance from friends and family—there’s no prize for going it alone—anything from shoveling the driveway, mowing the lawn, or picking up groceries
  • See your physicians and other medical professionals for regular checkups
  • Ask friends and family to tell you if they notice you’re relieving stress in unhealthy ways—are you smoking, eating, or drinking more.
  • Make sure to get enough sleep, grab a 10 minute nap when you can
  • Get a massage or other relaxing treatment on as regularly as you can manage. Some massage therapy schools may provide discounts.
  • Spend time with your pets. Take your dog for an extra-long walk every week.
  • Ask a good friend to proactively check in on you every now and then, give them authority to call you out and make you take a break

Your support team is there to help you along your caregiving journey. It is easy to think they don’t understand how hard it is to be a caregiver but the truth is, they are there to care for you.
