Respite Care Inspired by Joey’s Gift

Offering families and their children with disabilities the gift of rest and renewal!!!

The need for family caregiver respite services is urgent. Too many families with children with disabilities lack the information they need about existing resources that can help them keep their children safe and well at home. Too often, the unrelieved stress of 24-hour caregiving fractures families.

Joey’s Gift/Easterseals is creating a model caregiver respite program that provides essential services through trained volunteers.

History and Mission
When Bob and Wendy Minotti’s beloved son Joey passed away, they commited themselves to a mission of love in Joey’s name. They established Joey’s Gift, an effort to ensure that families with disabled children have access to the respite services and in-home support necessary to keep their children close and lovingly cared for.

The Minottis, drawing from their own experience of being forced to place Joey outside the home, have created a pathway of hope for other families dealing with the stress of constant caregiving. Partnering with Easterseals, first through their local affiliate in Volusia County, Florida, which welcomed Joey’s Gift with open arms, and now at the national level, Bob and Wendy have begun to realize their dream of helping others through Joey’s Gift/Easterseals Respite Care Program.

Programs and Plans
The goal of Joey’s Gift/Easterseals Respite Care Program is to offer short breaks for family caregivers to allow them the rest and renewal they need, provide recreation opportunities for children with disabilities and promote a better overall quality of family life.

Currently, Joey’s Gift/Easterseals in Florida offers a weekend day-long program. Parents drop their children off at an Easterseals site, where they receive the care and attention of trained volunteers under the direction of Easterseals staff. Fun is the order of the day for the children -- time off is the program’s gift to the rest of the family.

The Minotti family and Easterseals staff are now working to replicate the Florida program in communities nation-wide. The broader vision for Joey’s Gift/Easterseals encompasses center-based respite care, in-home services and opportunities for care at camps and at other recreational settings, as well as the creation of a how-to manual for community caregiving, outreach and education, research and advocacy.

Joey's Gift spreads a message of caring, compassion and understanding. The program makes people more sensitive to and comfortable with disability -- and more knowledgeable about the practical help needed by families.

Easterseals offers a variety of services that can bring peace of mind and a healthy break to family members and caregivers. These services include respite care, camping and recreation programs, adult day services and inclusive child care programs.
