Easter Seals Kicks Off Capital Campaign for Camp Fairlee

November 29, 2016

Easter Seals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore is proud to announce the public launch of a $4.5 million capital campaign for Camp Fairlee, the region’s only residential camp offering children and adults with disabilities a safe and accessible camp experience year-round. “CAMPaign Fairlee” allows Camp Fairlee to serve more individuals and families that depend on its services.

“After 60 years of operation, Camp Fairlee was in need of renovation and modernization,” David Doane, CAMPaign Fairlee Co-chair and Easter Seals Board Member, said. “When the board considered the serious needs of both the people served there and the families who depend on it for respite, there was no other choice but to take steps necessary to preserve and expand the camp.”

John Riley, also a CAMPaign Fairlee Co-Chair and Easter Seals Board Member, agreed: “Camp Fairlee has impacted the lives of more than 25,000 individuals with disabilities over the years but we know there are thousands more who could benefit. Camp offers children and adults with disabilities a place to try new things and discover their unrealized potential, while their families get a true break from the sometimes intense challenges of caregiving.”

Easter Seals CAMPaign Fairlee already has raised more than $3.7 million due to the early support of various companies, foundations and individuals in the community. The public is challenged to join this community-based, grassroots effort to help raise the remaining $800,000 of the total needed to pay for the recent upgrades to their 250-acre sprawling campus in Chestertown, MD.

“Camp Fairlee helps campers from around a multi-state region to build new skills, make new friendships, and experience things that they otherwise might not have access to do. They are creating lifetime memories for themselves and, at the same time, their families are getting respite time from caregiving,” Kenan Sklenar, Easter Seals President/CEO, said. “We are excited to kick off the CAMPaign and watch the life changing differences that occur at Camp Fairlee.”

Four new, fully accessible cabins, a new health center, an expanded dining hall and a new 12,000 square foot activity center have been added thanks to the campaign. These changes are already allowing camp to serve more families and to connect new partners interested in renting the facilities.
