For many parents with young children, playing sports comes with childhood. Weekends spent at tournaments are a common part of the weekly schedule. However, for children with disabilities, options are limited. That's where the Miracle League of Michigan steps in. For years hundreds of children and young adults have participated in the program that not only develops social skills but plays a major role in motor skill development and confidence building. Allison was one of those kids. For years her family traveled nearly 30 miles from their home in northern Oakland County to the field in Southfield. Then the decision was made to try and build a field closer to them and the idea for the Miracle League of North Oakland was born.
"(The program) is a lot of fun for her and it has helped build her self confidence. It means the world to us as a family. We are extremely proud of what she has been able to accomplish both on and off the field, despite some of her challenges. We are extremely excited to help bring the Miracle League to Orion Township. Both the community of Orion and Clarkston, as well as Easterseals Michigan have been extremely supportive to help make this dream a reality. The field will be a shining reflection of our inclusive community. We are looking forward to extending the reach of the Miracle League to a whole new group of kids that have never set foot on a baseball field as a player. We are looking forward to seeing their parents watch their child play baseball for the first time. On a real field, with real uniforms. Mostly, we are looking forward to knowing the positive impact ML will have on everyone's lives. The children, the families, and the community."
