Easterseals MORC Helps Man Overcome Shyness to Thrive in his Community

Jonathan loves to work on puzzles, stay as active as possible, and explore throughout his community. Since becoming a more active member in his community, Jonathan is able to explore various activities the area has to offer. He enjoys spending most of his free time with his friends laughing and finding new places for karaoke.

“I love going to Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle when I need a good laugh,” Jonathan said. “My friends and I also have a good time doing karaoke together. I’ve never been to a Red Wings game in person, but it’s on my bucket list.”

Jonathan has also been involved in wheelchair hockey for almost ten years. In 2013, he was introduced to the sport as a spectator when he was watching his roommate play. Shortly after that, he began playing the sport himself.

“The camaraderie that everyone has for each other is amazing,” Jonathan said. “It’s not about winning or losing a game, but having fun and being part of something special.”

Jonathan also enjoys participating in wheelchair ballroom dancing sessions taught at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio.

“I started doing Dance Mobility in spring of 2015,” Jonathan said. “I am incredibly blessed to be part of organizations that allow me to be able to experience activities like wheelchair ballroom dancing and wheelchair hockey."

However, Jonathan hasn’t always been this involved in his community. For most of his life he has faced challenges that affect his movement and muscle tone or posture. With the support of Easterseals MORC, he hasn’t let that get in the way of living his life on his terms.

“Throughout the 20 plus years of receiving services and support, Easterseals MORC has helped me to break free of my shyness shell,” Jonathan said. “Everyone I have worked with has been very committed to ensuring I am happy.”

Jonathan explained his gratitude for Easterseals MORC as they have helped and supported him in many ways. Most recently, they supported him while he obtained his Associates Degree in technological sciences from Oakland Community College.

"Easterseals MORC has been there for me most of my life," Jonathan said. "They've helped me get a job at Meijer and find an apartment where I can live independently. I don't know where I would be without them and many other organizations."
