Easterseals MORC Helped Woman to Maintain Independence and Find Confidence

Amie is a very friendly and outgoing individual who loves to talk to people, be a listening ear, and advocate for individuals with disabilities to ensure their rights are honored. She also enjoys music, playing on the computer, and is a frequent shopper.

“Shopping is one of my favorite things to do,” Amie said. “I’m a regular shopper at my local Walmart, the employees know me by name!”

Shortly after Amie’s mother passed away, her neighbor helped her find services at Easterseals MORC and ensured that she could remain independent, rather than being sent to a group home. Almost 20 years later, Amie has been receiving services and supports at Easterseals MORC and she continues to maintain her independence with an apartment of her own and control over the care she receives.

“Easterseals MORC helped me maintain my independence and gave me confidence,” Amie said. “Thanks to the team members I have worked with, I have a space to call my own with staff support help.”

Amie has been a long-time peer mentor at Easterseals MORC, furthering her passion for helping others live their best lives and have equal opportunities in society. She says she advises and encourages people she works with to apply for as many services and supports as possible because a larger support circle ensures their needs are met.

“Amie has a warm and caring personality,” Adam Fuhrman, Easterseals MORC Mental Health Clinician – IDD Peer Mentor Coordinator, said. “In the many years I’ve worked with her, it’s evident that she has a big heart and passion for helping people live the life they want.”

Despite challenges she has faced, including a recent battle with kidney cancer to which she has fully recovered, Amie’s positive nature and desire to help others radiates.

“Amie is wonderful, and I love her work ethic,” Bob Carlson, Easterseals MORC Lead Occupational Therapist, said. “She has a great sense of humor and enjoys a good laugh and story. She’s also an excellent advocate for herself and the individuals we serve.”

Thanks to the services and supports she received at Easterseals MORC, she had the confidence to launch a microbusiness with Avon. For many years, her work ethic and drive lead her to be one of Michigan’s top sales representatives. Amie smiling with her artwork at the ambassador photo shoot!

“I want to say thank you to Easterseals MORC and on behalf of those who may not be able to thank you,” Amie said. “You helped me, and many others live the life they wish to live. Thank you for helping me find my confidence.”
