An Open Letter to the Presidential Candidates and Candidates for Public Office

Disability issues have taken center stage this election season — and it’s high time they did.

At Easterseals, we believe every American deserves to live with dignity and independence. That means we champion the issues that impact more than 56.7 million Americans living with disability, along with the estimated 62 million eligible voters in this year’s electorate who have a family member with a disability.

At this pivotal moment, we are compelled to amplify the voices of people with disabilities, and those impacted by disability, to make sure the issues that they care about most are heard — now, and long after the polls close.

With that in mind, we reached out to our clients and supporters to learn more about what they face — from access to affordable healthcare and early intervention services, to accessibility and economic well-being. They told us*:

  • Healthcare continues to be a top priority. 68.9% of survey respondents identified affordable healthcare as their most important issue, while 66.6% said access to healthcare topped their list.
  • Access to services is important as well, with 66% of survey respondents saying it’s one of the things most important to them.
  • Early intervention and access to assistive technology are key for them, with 43.8% citing early intervention and 38.8% citing access to assistive technology as very important.

There’s no question that these issues are nuanced and complex, and it’s critical to have the support of elected officials to address them.

We applaud those with real plans of action and want to work with you to change the way the world defines and views disability.

Easterseals is dedicated to providing opportunities for people of all ages with a range of disabilities to achieve their full potential. We made great strides working together with legislators to pass the Americans with Disabilities Act 26 years ago. There is still much more work to do.

For nearly 100 years, Easterseals has made a profound, positive difference in the lives of people with disabilities every single day. Today, the need for the work we do has never been greater, and we look forward to partnering with you to build a better future.

Sincerely,

Randy Rutta
