Easter Seals Launches Program for Veterans Returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with Traumatic Brain Injuries (Chicago, July 3, 2007) -- Easter Seals affiliates in Dallas/Fort Worth, Hartford and Sacramento, with funding from the Ludy Family Foundation, are conducting a pilot project to help returning veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). According to the Department of Defense, the signature wound for U.S. soldiers involved in the Global War on Terrorism is TBI. The Department of Defense recently reported that there are 21,128 blast survivors, and 5,282 returning veterans with the potential for some level of TBI. For nearly 90 years, Easter Seals has played a leading role in helping veterans with disabilities in their local communities through medical rehabilitation, home accessibility, job training and employment, and recreation. Easter Seals will use Posit Science’s Brain Fitness Program, a non-invasive computer-based training program that has demonstrated significant improvement in memory, communication and clarity of thinking. In initial studies with older adults, participants improved brain function by 10 percent. This program also may be effective for individuals with TBI, and this project will evaluate its efficacy. Veterans with mild to moderate TBI and their families are encouraged to call toll-free 866.423.4981 or email: veterans@easterseals.com to participate in this pilot project held at Easter Seals. Participants who complete the 14-week program will receive a modest stipend and reimbursement for program-related expenses. The program itself is offered at no charge to participants.
