Autism is a developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. Autism impacts the normal development of the brain. Individuals with autism experience significant challenges in social interactions and communication, and display unusual behaviors and interests. The diagnosis of autism has been estimated to occur in as many as 1 in 150 individuals. Autism is four times more prevalent in males than females and knows no racial boundaries. The diagnosis of autism has been growing at an estimated rate of 100-200% every 5 years. By learning the signs, a child can begin benefiting from one of the many specialized intervention programs.
Understanding Autism The condition we traditionally call “autism” is really one of a set of five closely related conditions. These five conditions, which all share symptoms, fall under the broad diagnostic umbrella of “Pervasive Developmental Disorders”. They all share the three primary symptoms of impaired social interaction, impaired communication, and characteristic behavior patterns.
Services for children and adults Easter Seals programs across the country provide a wide variety of interventions that help individuals of all abilities, including those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A basic rule for treating autism is the earlier the intervention the better. Coordinated, structured services that take into account the "whole person" and the individual's family are more likely to be successful.
