What's Happening Now
On Thursday, December 24, 2009, the U.S. Senate successfully passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R. 3590), the Senate-authored, broad healthcare reform bill. This legislation includes insurance market reforms, an expansion of the Medicaid program to allow coverage of people up to 133 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, and the Community Living Assistance Services and Supports (CLASS) Act which can provide long-term services and supports to people with disabilities and chronic conditions. With passage of the Senate legislation, a conference committee must now work out the differences between it and the Affordable Health Care for America Act (H.R. 3962) as passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on November 7, 2009. The conference measure will then return to each house for final approval. It is hoped that President Obama could sign healthcare reform legislation early in 2010. Take Action!
