Easterseals’ Santa Makes Wishes Come True

December 12, 2017

Not every organization can say they have their very own Santa, but Easterseals can! He may not live in the North Pole and he may not have reindeer out back, but he brings smiles to the faces of the children that receive therapy at Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore. More than smiles, Mark Lobach, of Chesapeake City, MD, gives children with disabilities independence and the gift of mobility through his volunteer work with the GoBabyGo! project, modified ride-on cars.

Mark Lobach, AKA Easterseals’ Santa, loves seeing children, like Journey Parson (center), experience independence for the first time in their modified ride-on car. Journey is pictured with her Easterseals therapist, Colleen Heckman, and her parents, Rich and Patrice Parson of Smyrna.

“My favorite part about volunteering for Easterseals with the cars is watching the kids get in the first time and take off! It is amazing watching them figure it out. Whatever you thought they’d do, they think of another way and so quickly,” Mark says. “I also love watching the parents and therapists. Everyone is always surprised.”

Mark started volunteering for Easterseals when he retired. Now he is known around Easterseals as Santa since he has a trademark white beard and shows up with ride-on cars that he has modified to fit the various challenges of each child. From big button starters to stand and sit starters to joy sticks, Mark, along with the help of his wife, Fran, has come up with it all to help these children find independence and keep up with their friends.

“This job chose me. My daughter heard about the program and thought it was a good fit,” Mark says. “It is a fun thing to do and challenging. We have to find a way to make the car do something it wasn’t intended to do and we always find a way!”

Easterseals celebrates people, like Mark, who spend their time volunteering their talents and expertise for people with disabilities. Mark is one of the over 1000 volunteers that support Easterseals and their mission to give people with disabilities more independent lifestyles. "We have been so fortunate to work with Mark and Fran Lobach on the GoBabyGo! Project,” Pam Reuther, Easterseals vice president of programs, says. “Each child with disabilities has unique needs and the Lobach’s ability to modify the car to meet those needs, means that every child can have the opportunity to independently 'drive' their own car and experience the freedom of movement. They really are Mr. & Mrs. Claus, bringing joy to children and families all year 'round!"

When asked how he feels about being called Easterseals’ Santa Claus, Mark chuckled and said “Oh I don’t mind. The first batch of cars I delivered was just before Christmas and I guess it was fitting.”
