Counseling

Counseling at the Easterseals Rehabilitation Center helps Ben tackle life's challenges.

Tackling the teen years is tough for any young person with disabilities. Ben G. is bright, has a memory for facts, and loves sports. He also has Asperger's syndrome (a sensory integration disorder related to autism) and Tourette's syndrome (a neurological condition causing motor and vocal tics). These conditions have made it extremely difficult for Ben to read social cues, relate to other people, and "fit in" with kids his age. In middle school, he was teased, beaten up, and isolated.School was almost unbearable until Ben learned coping and social skills at the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center in Evansville, IN.

Ben's mother Kim recalled the family's initial objectives. "We said that if you could help him have just one friend, we would be thrilled." Counseling Services, combined with medication management by the Center's staff psychiatrist, helped Ben achieve that goal and many others.

Ben is no longer on the sidelines of life, thanks to Counseling Services. As manager of his freshman football team, he cheers on his teammates.

Counselor and social worker Mark Chumbler said, "With the outstanding support of his family, Ben has done great. He has responded to almost everything we have ever asked of him."

Ben's family couldn't be happier. "Mark is the best thing that ever happened to us," Kim said. "In (middle school), Benjamin made his first friend! That has opened up a whole new set of other friends, too."

In 8th grade, Ben had made so much progress that he was selected to make a special presentation to his idol Peyton Manning, quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts, when the athlete visited Ben's school.

As a freshman in high school, Ben has achieved another goalthat might have seemed impossible a few months ago. He successfully interacts with both adults and his peers every day as the manager of his freshman football team!

"The main thing that counseling has been able to help us with is social skills," Kim said. "But more than that, Mark has really kept Benjamin alive. What I mean is that kids with disabilities like Ben's know they are different. They struggle with that every day. Often they don't want to keep going. Mark gave Ben hope and helped him get through the tough times. He really has been a lifesaver for Ben."
