Speech Therapy in Action:
Ari, Easterseals North Carolina

Ari may not be a typical college student. Due to spinal muscular atrophy -- a disease that affects voluntary muscles for activities such as walking, head and neck control and swallowing -- he depends on 24-hour nursing care and therapy for his daily routine. But don’t think special needs have stopped Ari.

"I’ve never missed the honor roll and I was even inducted into the National Honor Society," Ari says. "I completed my first year at Central Piedmont Community College [in Charlotte, N.C.]. After another year, I plan to transfer to a university and eventually become a medical researcher.”

With the help of dedicated speech therapists at Easterseals North Carolina, Ari has made strides in his progress to communicate. Since his speech is soft and his voice can get lost in a crowd, Ari has been taught to use a speech enhancer that allows him to play a more active role in class. The enhancer is an amplifier that is placed in the classroom, allowing him to be heard by fellow students.

Ari tells his story around the state on behalf of Easterseals North Carolina; his vision for life is the same as the organization's goal: “Together we strive to make Easterseals the best place for children and adults with disabilities to accomplish their dreams and realize that, they too, can make a great contribution to society.”

Medical rehabilitation services, including speech and hearing therapies, are the cornerstone of Easterseals' programming. Services focus on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disabilities to help individuals like Ari live as independently as possible.
