As part of its long-held tradition of support and advocacy for people with disabilities, Safeway Inc. and The Safeway Foundation recently kicked off their annual fundraising campaign to benefit Easter Seals and two other organizations that help people with disabilities live fuller, more independent lives.

“We have designated August as our time to make a difference in the lives of countless people served by these well-respected organizations,” said Larree Renda, Safeway Executive Vice President and Chair of The Safeway Foundation. “Because one in five people live with a physical or intellectual disability, few causes resonate as deeply with our employees, customers and in our neighborhoods as the need to help people with disabilities reach their full potential.”

During the month of August, customers are adding Easter Seals to their grocery shopping lists and participating in an in-store fund raising campaign at check-out stands. At each of the company’s Safeway, Vons, Pavilions, Tom Thumb or Randalls stores, they can look for the messages on the credit card terminal and select Easter Seals. Funds raised support the nonprofit’s local services to people with disabilities and their families.

Safeway Inc. is one of Easter Seals’ most generous corporate partners. In 2013, the campaign raised nearly $7 million for Easter Seals affiliates across the United States. Over the past 28 years, Safeway has raised nearly $140 million to help Easter Seals support the exceptional programs that make a difference in local communities.

“One of the reasons we’ve been with Easter Seals all these years is because the money we raise stays in local communities. And, Easter Seals is the best in its class at doing things efficiently so that the dollars raised go directly to clients served by the organization,” Renda adds.

Funds donated by Safeway’s customers have helped to expand early intervention programs, which are critical for children, especially those with autism or other disabilities, among other vital services that help children and adults with special needs.

"We are amazed at the impact that Safeway, its customers and employees have made each year on the lives of our clients and their families,” said James E. Williams, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer, Easter Seals. “We encourage shoppers to give a little hope to people with disabilities this August.”
