Today, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi joined Members of Congress, veterans service organizations, business and non-profit leaders to honor former Senator Elizabeth Dole for her extensive work to support and strengthen military families and caregivers.

“Senator Elizabeth Dole has demonstrated extraordinary leadership on behalf of military families, informed by her own experience, bound by her own powerful connection to the men and women who don't don the uniform, but bear the burden of war and its aftermath alongside those that do,” Leader Pelosi said.  “As we approach Memorial Day, we must keep our commitment to our veterans by answering Elizabeth Dole's call to serve military caregivers as well as they serve their loved ones.”

“Leader Pelosi has provided wonderful support and model leadership by working with the Foundation very early on to ensure Congress is a part of our holistic approach to uplifting military and veteran caregivers,” said Senator Elizabeth Dole.  “It is now our goal to translate the strong bi-partisan voices we have signed on into solutions and actions.  We're counting on our friends and allies on the Hill to help us continue building awareness and inspiring change both here in Washington and across the nation in support of the Hidden Heroes taking care of those who cared for us.”

Through “Caring for Military Families: The Elizabeth Dole Foundation,” Senator Dole has taken the lead in raising awareness of the men and women who care for our wounded warriors; offering aid to millions of caregivers nationwide; and recognizing the sacrifices of military spouses and families alongside our service members.

On April 10th, Leader Pelosi attended a meeting hosted by Senator Dole where caregivers shared their stories, their challenges, the hardships they face and the assistance they need as they tend to their loved ones wounded during the longest period of way in the nation’s history.

The following day, Senator Dole joined First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden at the White House to launch “Hidden Heroes: The National Coalition for Military Caregivers,” a partnership spanning public, private, labor, non-profit, and faith communities to address gaps in services and support for those who care for injured veterans.

At today's event, Leader Pelosi and Senator Dole conveyed the importance of bi-partisan support.  Attendees including legislators, advocates and caregivers heard from James Williams, President and CEO of Easter Seals, and Eric Eversole, Vice President of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce about the significant commitments their organizations have made as early members of the Foundation’s national coalition.  Senator Dole has issued a national call to action for individuals and organizations across the country to do the same.
