On Thursday, January 11, 2024, Easterseals National President and CEO Kendra Davenport was honored to join Easterseals South Florida for the 33rd annual Festival of Chefs celebrating the work of the Easterseals South Florida Culinary Arts High School. Dedicated to providing vocational training and job placement assistance for students with autism and other developmental disabilities, this unique institution is at the heart of Easterseals South Florida’s mission to empower and uplift our community. The event featured an extraordinary lineup of South Florida’s culinary elite including Chef José Mendín, and Puerto Rican singing sensation Jay Wheeler for an unforgettable night where each plate contributed to a brighter future for promising students seeking success in life. Easterseals South Florida raised over $90,000 to support the work of the Culinary Arts High School and the opportunities they provide students inside and outside the classroom.

“I am always energized when I travel to see the life-changing work our affiliates do every day. The Easterseals South Florida Culinary Arts High School is a perfect example of our commitment to 100% equity, inclusion, and access for people with disabilities,” said Kendra Davenport, President and CEO of Easterseals. “By preparing students with autism and other disabilities for a career in the culinary industry, our school is helping graduates lead independent lives. And we couldn’t do it without the tremendous support from the community. A special thanks to Chef Chair José Mendín and musician Jay Wheeler, along with a remarkable array of chefs, for coming out to support our students.”

“I am truly honored to have served as the event chef chair for this year's Festival of Chefs,” says Chef Jose Mendin. “Year after year, I find immense joy in being part of this event and giving back to such a meaningful cause. The Easterseals South Florida Festival of Chefs is more than just a culinary celebration, it's an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of those with disabilities and special needs.”

“It was an honor to be able to attend the Easterseals Festival of the Chefs. I’ve always wanted to support a cause like this, not only as an advocate for those with disabilities, but for my brother,” said Jay Wheeler, musician and Ambassador Award Recipient. “I want him to know we are always here for him, and working with Easterseals is one of the best gifts I could’ve given to him.”

“Is there a better way to kick off 2024 than by bringing the community together to celebrate and support an important cause?” said Pietro Bonacossa, Vice President of Development at Easterseals South Florida. “Festival of Chefs is a true labor of love, and we’re so grateful to all our participating chefs, sponsors, guests, volunteers and friends who helped create magic while raising funds and awareness for Easterseals South Florida’s Culinary Arts students.”

“I felt so incredibly honored to be asked to serve as the event emcee for Festival of Chefs, knowing that one of our community’s favorite artists Jay Wheeler would be making a special guest appearance,” said Miami TV personality Kelly Blanco, who served as the event's emcee. This is South Florida’s longest-running food event that benefits the Easterseals Culinary Arts program for students with unique abilities – a cause that’s near and dear to my heart.”

“When I was initially invited by Easterseals South Florida to attend Festival of Chefs, I was excited to be part of an event for such an amazing cause, that provides services on such a broad spectrum. Once in attendance, meeting the other chefs, being heard and seen by my peers within the same industry was God sent,” said Chef Ty, winner of the Golden Chef Award for Best Dish (Savory). “Receiving the Golden Chef Award for Best Dish (Savory) was phenomenal! Winning this award as a first-time attendee is a blessing totally unexpected. I am humbled that those in attendance were able to enjoy the love I put into my work, enough so to vote me as best dish.”

“Through My Signature Cafecito Brownie and the Miami Culinary Institute, my goal is to inspire and encourage others to pursue their dreams relentlessly, despite life's obstacles.” said Chef Christian, winner of the Golden Chef Award for Best Dish (Sweet).  “This award is a reminder that with passion and perseverance, one can turn their dreams into reality. Never give up on the journey to create something extraordinary."
