Easter Seals announces the election of James E. Williams, Jr., president and chief executive officer, Easter Seals, to serve on the Advisory Board of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation for Military Caregivers.

“I admire the work of the Foundation and its mission to uplift and strengthen services for American military caregivers,” said Williams. “I am delighted to be joining the board of an organization that will promote the health of caregivers through innovation, evidence-based research, and collaboration.”

Easter Seals, which has been advocating for and providing services and supports to veterans and military personnel living with disabilities since World War II, has a strong commitment to education, training and support for military and veteran family caregivers.

Easter Seals and Elizabeth Dole Foundation believe those—as many as 1 million—spouses, parents, and others who care for our nation’s military injured military members and veterans deserve the best support in light of the mental, physical, and financial challenges they face in caring for wounded warriors suffering from the physical and invisible wounds of war.

“I am eager to work with the other members as we advance the goals of the Foundation and seek improved health care for military caregivers,” said Williams. “Going forward, we hope our partnership will inform community leaders and help them to effectively meet military caregivers’ challenges and needs.

Easter Seals provides comprehensive services for military services members, veterans and their families. In addition to caregiver training and respite services, the organization provides financial planning, a program supporting caregivers through the Department of Veterans Affairs, community services, a national information hotline and an Internet-based interactive program that educates employers on hiring veterans. In Washington, DC, Easter Seals staff works to influence legislation affecting service members, veterans and their families and actively engages with Congressional staff in pursuit of these goals.

Williams was appointed president and chief executive officer of Easter Seals in June 1990, shortly before the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990. With more than 40 years of experience at Easter Seals, Williams has helped lead Easter Seals to become the nation’s largest service provider for children and adults living with autism and other disabilities, with new program sites and service offerings for more than 1.3 million individuals. Additionally, Williams has served as Past Chairman of the National Health Council and was a member of the Board of Governors of the Institute for Philanthropy. Historically, he has also has served on the boards of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, the JM Foundation Search for Excellence, the National Foundation for Dentistry for People with Disabilities, the Montessori School of Lake Forest and the Missouri Commission on Comprehensive Health Planning. He and his wife, Lorraine, are long-time residents of Lake Forest, Illinois, a community north of Chicago.
