Easterseals NY (ESNY) provides a community based residential setting designed for individuals with developmental disabilities to feel like a person’s home. The goal of staff intervention in the IRAs is to build skills and help the individuals live as independently as possible.
The IRA staff work collaboratively with the resident’s medical team to ensure proper medical treatment is maintained. Medication is given in the homes by Approved Medication Assistive Personnel (AMAP) certified staff. Nurse Coordinators are assigned to each home and oversee the resident’s medical care.
At the IRAs, ESNY creates an individualized living opportunity that people are proud to call their home, personalized by the residents. ESNY provides residential opportunities specifically developed to encourage and support those with developmental disabilities to live as independently as possible (e.g. adaptive technology, monitoring systems, etc.). An individualized plan to help the individual reach his/ her goals and reach greater independence is developed and implemented by the resident and team. Program activities focus on daily living skills such as recreation, cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene, money management, and community outreach skills. All residents partake in a school, work, volunteer opportunities, or day programs outside of the home during the day. In addition, residents may choose to utilize community recreation programs, shopping facilities, religious services, and medical services.
