Joining forces to Celebrate 25th Anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

Easterseals and Western Reserve Independent Living Center came together to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act on September 14th at the Nathaniel R. Jones Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse located at 10 E. Commerce Street in Youngstown. Non-profit leaders, political leaders and those who face living with a disability and/or special need throughout our Valley joined us to celebrate this milestone.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed in 1990 to provide equal opportunity and full participation for all people with disabilities. It wasn't an easy victory, and our work is not yet done. But on September 14th we recognized the ADA's 25th anniversary, we're recognizing how far we've come and the road ahead.

Senator Capri S. Cafaro led the press conference with a warm welcome and some history about the ADA. “It’s hard to believe that it’s only been 25 years since this groundbreaking piece of legislation has been the law of the land,” stated Cafaro.  “Everyone has a right to thrive, and the ADA is part of that story.”

The press conference also included:

  • ADA 25th Anniversary Recognition was presented from the Trumbull County Commissioners Frank Futta and Mauro Cantalamassa
  • Trumbull County Proclamation was presented by Trumbull County Treasurer Sam Lamancusa on behalf of  Mayor Franklin to Pam Davies
  • Tim Nelson presented Mayor McNally’s Proclamation recognizing September’s celebration in his absence
  • Tim Nelson, President & CEO of Easterseals, presented local history regarding the ADA
  • Pam Davies, CEO of Western Reserve Independent Living Center, informed the crowd how the ADA has impacted our Valley

“Though we have come so far, there is still work that needs to be done”, stated Tim Nelson  “There’s still a lot of discrimination, particularly in the jobs and transportation issues for individuals with disabilities. We must work together with all our local agencies and local government leaders to help address such issues and find solutions.”  Click here to view TV coverage of the event.
