Continuing a Family Tradition

Sawyer Beef is recognized as locally grown beef in the Quad Cities area. The meat is sold at farmers' markets and in local grocery stores. The Sawyer farm is located in Princeton, Iowa, and the family has been farming in Scott County for five generations.

Norman and his wife Lorna Sawyer took over the farm in the 1970s and in 2005, Norman’s son Neal and his wife Lucie Sawyer joined Sawyer Beef to continue the tradition of selling beef that has no growth hormones and no routine antibiotics. Norman also uses the high-quality leather from his cattle to make and sell leather products including computer cases and satchels.

Three years ago Norman obtained a spinal cord injury. Easter Seals Iowa supported Norman to obtain a grant that provided deep freezers to accommodate customers in the local community. Norman also utilizes a voice-activated computer program that allows him to write emails, manage the books for the farm, write checks and utilize online banking.
