Seruga grant supports LEAP

Easter Seals Eastern Pennsylvania recently received a $2,000 grant from the Ruth P. Seruga Trust to support LEAP Lehigh Valley, a signature program that leads to greater quality of life and independence for kids and young adults with disabilities.

The LEAP (Learning, Enrichment and Partnerships) program helps young adults and their families begin the transition from high school to successful adulthood through innovative community exploration activities. The program utilizes community activities to introduce career options, social network development, a greater sense of independence, and the opportunity to expand relationships with peers and potential employers. LEAP has been so successful that we are expanding it into a year-round program in the Lehigh Valley. During the school year, high school students will attend a job club one day a week after school and attend a community exploration program a second afternoon. The job club offers training on social skills, dress for success, interviewing skills, resume development, job interest inventories and more. Community exploration involves visiting various employers and learning about jobs, volunteering at different nonprofit organizations, and exploring recreational opportunities in the community. By helping families prepare in advance for the transition, they are in a better position when the time comes to make the change. And their sons and daughters are ready to jump off into interesting, fulfilling and challenging opportunities that support their personal goals and interests.
