Making the Right Moves

September 28, 2021

Our guardianship team works to ensure the best interest of those who have been placed in their care. They listen intently to the ward’s goals and looks within their environment to make sure their needs are met. Here are two success stories of getting their clients into the right housing placement.

Yessenia was living with her Aunt about one and a half years ago. She had constant behavioral concerns and elopements - running away with random men she met online. Yessenia’s aunt did not want her in the home anymore. While Yessenia’s mom wants to be involved, she cannot handle Yessenia being in her home and refused to be guardian due to Yessenia’s behaviors. Our guardianship team member Kellie convinced the family to allow Yessenia to move into her own apartment. Since then Yessenia has been doing great – she has had no more elopements, lets supported independent living staff in multiple days a week, and started a new job 2 weeks ago!

Janice was living in her own apartment and sharing the apartment with her two developmentally disabled sons who were supposedly providing care. Our guardianship team member Justina noticed on her visits that the care Janice was receiving was very sub-par. Janice was having trouble moving around and her sons were often not present. After a lot of effort Justina was able to get a protective placement order and JB has moved into an assisted living facility. She is doing much better and is very happy with her new placement. Her sons are able to just be her sons and are happy with her care.
