Caregiver Story April

My husband and I were married for 52 years. We were partners throughout our marriage until the last few years. Suddenly I found out it was no longer a "partnership" but a "caregiver" role. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Suddenly I became in charge of everything.

This was new, scary, and very difficult. No one can understand what "caregiver" means until they become one. It takes all of your love and compassion to get by.

The Caregiver Support Group at Easterseals Joliet Region helps you realize that you are not alone. They are the only ones that understand the role. The support group cries together and laughs together. We share information and resources for help. The group understands the difficulties, frustrations, anxieties, sleep deprivations, and worry on a daily basis. There are lots of hugs and laughs!

Caregiving has taught me patience, patience, and more patience! When you get frustrated, leave the room!

Parkinson's Disease took my husband 1/2 year ago. I have no regrets!

The Caregiver Support Group has become my family and friends.

Hang in there and keep smiling!
