Wauwatosa ADS Sensory Room Project

A sensory room is a space designed to help an individual with sensory issues learn to regulate their brain’s negative reactions to external stimuli by developing coping skills for these experiences. A sensory space can open up a whole new world for individuals with physical or cognitive impairments. Care providers that work with these individuals can offer great therapeutic benefits to all of their clients by presenting them a multi‐sensory experience.

Sensory spaces have many benefits including:

Calming Effects
Spending time in a dim, calming room where individuals can be alone and take charge of their emotions is a huge benefit.
Stimulation
In some cases, additional sensory stimulation can encourage feelings of awareness and well-being.
Improved Focus
A sensory room can increase awareness of their surroundings and learn to cope with real-life situations where concentration is required.
Motor Skills Development
A safe space to hone fine motor skills and practice movement can be beneficial.
Cognitive Development
Sensory rooms can be instrumental in teaching individuals how to process experiences.
Sensory Development
Individuals can explore their senses and their brain’s reaction to those experiences in a safe, stress-free environment.
