Some Background about the Fine Arts Program

In December of 2000 the Fine Arts Program was created to bring an avenue of creative expression to a group of people that have historically been denied access to developing art that can be defined as "Fine". The studio offers the artists the opportunity to express themselves through a wide array of mediums. On any given day there are 5 to 10 adults with various types of developmental disabilities concentrating on works of art ranging from oil paintings to building bird houses. Depending on their particular limitations staff members offer only the amount of assistance needed to ensure every artist knows he/she is responsible for piece in its entirety.

Some would think that developing a program with this type of focus and success is more than enough. However, Director Julie Kenard has taken it to a whole other level. Once a picture is completed all of the materials necessary to make it "sellable" are available to them. All pictures are placed in only the nicest frames and with matting if necessary. Artists are taught how to make a picture or sculpture look and feel complete.

Once the art is ready for exhibition the artists are given ample opportunities to integrate with the community by displaying their work at local galleries, exhibitions, competitions, and craft fairs. The artists are encouraged to demonstrate and work in public settings to promote their artistic endeavors. They are recognized for their abilities and not their disabilities.

The process of an artist choosing what he/she is going to paint, draw, sculpt, or create out of recycled paper and leaves is the beginning of a road that leads to the eventual sale if they choose of the very piece they are 100% responsible for. Many of the artists have sold numerous pieces since December 2000, some have continued to take their pieces home to share with their families, and others are still working to create their first piece to sell.
If you are interested in learning more about the Fine Arts Program or would like to tour the Studio please call Julie Kennard at (530) 673-4585 ext 18. Art is created on a timeline determined by the artists and not based on demand. If you would like to purchase art for your home, lobby, or as a gift please give Julie a call and she'll be delighted to assist you.
