Easter Seals Oregon’s Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) provides job search and training assistance to seniors (55+) who are unemployed. Dave House entered the program after being laid off from a longtime position as a driver with a blueprint company. As a participant in the program Dave attended weekly training classes, received assistance with tailoring his resume to the positions he was seeking, and learned effective job search and interview skills. A significant portion of the training he received allowed him to develop a wide range of computer skills, something he sees as a must for almost all job seekers today.

As part of his training Dave participated in three different internships with local non-profit organizations, helping him gain the skills necessary to obtain full time employment. His first internship was with Easter Seals Oregon, where he worked with several programs, including the Latino Connection program. His next assignment was at Community Energy Project, which provides weatherization for low income individuals. Finally he worked with Impact Northwest, which helps people with housing, energy assistance and other social services. During his internships Dave answered phones, provided customer service to clients, helped write an office procedure manual, did computer data entry and handled general office duties.

Each training opportunity not only helped him develop new skills, but also increased his confidence. Armed with that he successfully found full time employment at Portland Habilitation Center Northwest, a position he has now held for over a year. In his position Dave oversees agreements, scans them into the computer system and helps ensure that guidelines are met and followed, as well as being involved with special projects and quality control.

Dave says life is good now that he has a steady income. The medical and dental insurance his job provides allows him to take care of his health and gives him a sense security. He enjoys time with friends, has reconnected with classmates from high school and regularly walks his six year old lab. Dave has a positive outlook on life and speaks highly of SCSEP and everyone with whom we worked while enrolled in the program. “I highly recommend the SCSEP program to anyone who is willing to work hard and learn.” says Dave. “Everyone I encountered was a pleasure to work with.”
