Introduction

Robert Webb is a US Navy Veteran who served honorably through the years of 1980 through 1985. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Robert and his wife (Heather) found themselves with a need for a permanent home. The Webbs came to the Easterseals Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program in January of 2020, as they were living in a house that was not safely habitable, and they needed to find a new home.

Seeking a Stable Home

Since they joined our program, the Webb family has consistently worked hard to turn their life around. When Robert and our staff first met, we could see his immediate urgency and determination toward finding permanent housing. From day one, we worked hard to match Robert’s unwavering dedication to find them a perfect home. Robert and his wife wanted a home where they could raise their child, and a neighborhood that they felt was safe. As a team, we sat down and wrote out a list of factors they see as safe; and from this list, we found the perfect home in the Gresham Park Apartments, so we sent in an application and waited for a response.

Building a Stable Foundation

During the time Robert spent in our Veteran housing program, he also participated in a program called Constructing Hope. This program aims to help communities become self-sufficient by training people within the community to get construction certifications. After completing the certification course(s), members are provided access to numerous career opportunities in the field of construction.

Welcome Home

On October 20th, 2020, the Webb family was approved to move into the Gresham Park Apartments; and with the help of the Homes for Heroes Foundation, we were able to provide the fundamentals for Webb’s new home with a “Welcome Home” box. With this, the Webbs are now set up with brand new kitchen supplies such as dishes, cups, pots, pans and a coffee maker. We were also able to provide them with some other necessities such as towels, laundry detergent, a vacuum, and more. On October 27th, 2020, Robert and Heather moved into their new apartment and started making it a home, just in time for their newborn baby.

Thank You

The Webbs extend their deepest appreciation to the Homes for Heroes Foundation for providing them the necessities towards starting their home, and to Easterseals Oregon for all that we have been been able to provide them with over their time in our program. Robert, Heather, and their little one are beyond happy with their new home, and they said they “could not say thank you enough” to all of the Easterseals staff who have helped them one way or another towards reaching this goal.

Next Steps

Robert was able to transition seamlessly into our Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) after working with our Veterans employment team. The next steps for him will be building a professional resume, learning some new employment skills, and gaining interview/application skills that will make him a phenomenal candidate in the ever-changing job market. We look forward to hearing about Mr. Webb's success from our SCSEP team!
