Mr. Mcguire - A Homeless Veteran Success Story

Supportive Services for Veteran Families program participant Mr. McGuire - posing with his dog and his welcome-home kit, in his new apartment.

Mr. McGuire is a Veteran who served honorably in the United States Marine Corps, stationed in Hawaii where he was assigned to the artillery battery unit from 1976 - 1978. Mr. McGuire had many successful civilian occupations, most recently working as a building maintenance man in an apartment complex where part of his compensation was the use of an apartment.

Barriers to Success

Unfortunately, Mr. McGuire’s employment ended and he was given notice to vacate the apartment by 8/31/2020. Since his employment and residence were both with the same apartment complex, this meant he lost both his home and his job in the same moment. With no resources for housing, he began living with his dog, Ringo, in a car that a friend had loaned him.

Finding the Right Support

Mr. McGuire contacted Transition Projects Inc. in Portland who then referred him to the Easterseals Oregon Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Portland office. An RRH Pre-Screen was completed with him by an SSVF Case Manager, followed by the completion of an SSVF RRH Intake on 9/1/2020. The intake was reviewed and approved for enrollment on 9/3/2020 and, using SSVF Temporary Financial Assistance funds, Mr. McGuire was able to check into a motel that same day.

Putting Success Back In Sight

Referrals were sent by the Case Manager to both the SSVF Housing Specialists and our Homeless Veterans Rehabilitation Program (HVRP) to assist him in finding permanent housing as well as employment. The Case Manager contacted HUD-VASH and Mr. McGuire was assigned a HUD-VASH Social Worker to support him with the process of securing a HUD-VASH housing voucher. Mr. McGuire’s Housing Specialist assisted him in completing and submitting multiple rental applications; and on 10/19/2020, he was approved at the Rockwood Station apartments. Mr. McGuire moved into his apartment on 10/27/2020. Our team purchased him a twin bed, a pillow and some linens, and Mr. Mcguire was provided a Homes for Heroes Welcome Home Kit which provided numerous household items. Our team paid for the Rockwood Station application fee, security deposit, pro-rated rent for October, and full rent for November.

Words of Gratitude from Mr. McGuire

Mr. McGuire expressed his gratitude in saying “your program has taken me from total homelessness – me and my dog sleeping in my car - to putting a roof over my head in the motel within a couple days ... you then helped me put in applications, find an apartment, and paid for the fees and rent they needed, things I could not have done without this Veterans program.”
