Leonor - A Connecting Communities Success Story

Connecting Communities participant, Leonor, relaxing on her couch at home.

Introduction

Our success story from the Connecting Communities Office in Beaverton for March is from our participant Leonor who has been working with us for over a year and has been a joy to work with, the entire time. When we met Leonor she was working housekeeping at a local hotel, but the work was wearing on her body physically and she was looking for a way to transition into a field, which would cater to her disabilities.

Staying Hopeful and Productive

During the pandemic, when her hours were cut at the hotel due to the lack of travel, we were able to help Leonor with food boxes, transportation, and rent and utility assistance. Thanks to our Comcast Grant, we were also able to gift Leonor a ChromeBook that she has been using to connect to our English classes and Job Readiness classes from home. Leonor told us that her family was hit very hard by the pandemic, and connecting to the classes was a way for her to focus on something productive while taking her mind off all the stress and anxiety surrounding her.

A New Opportunity

We were able to place Leonor working as a caretaker for an elderly client, which is less physically intensive than her old work and caters to her barriers. We have been working with her to get the proper training so she feels comfortable advocating for herself to her employers and clients for her working rights and schedule.

We are so proud of all that Leonor has been able to do in such a difficult year and we are so excited for her new position and everything the future holds for her!
Keep it up Leonor!
