Finding Job Security In A Job Doing Security - Cedric's Story

Homeless Veteran Reintegration Program participant, Cedric Graves. He is in his security officer uniform, in the security booth at his job. He's giving a thumbs up and smiling under his mask. It's night time in the photo.

Introduction

Cedric grew up in the small town of Water Lou, Iowa and was a star athlete at East Water Lu High School. His father and uncle were both in the Military which inspired him to join the US Army at the age of 17 years old. After he left the Army, he utilized his GI Bill and enrolled at the University of Northern Iowa. While at school, he met his wife, and they had two kids. While serving in Korea, Cedric was unfortunately introduced to drugs, and he carried that addiction with him for many years. His addiction landed him in jail for two years. Then after his release in 1984, Cedric moved back to Portland, Oregon with his wife and kids. Shortly after, he enrolled himself in a recovery program for addiction. After completing his recovery program, Cedric spent 20 years as a Class A truck driver. For quite some time, life seemed pretty stable and normal for Cedric, but then he became homeless again after COVID-19 brought his career to a halt.

Connecting Cedric With Success

Cedric reached out to the Oregon Veteran’s Affairs (VA) office, and he was connected to James - a VA Representative who assisted with housing and employment. James told Cedric about Easterseals Oregon and helped him make a connection to our Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Case Manager, Angela Corll for housing assistance. Angela was able to refer Cedric to Ryan at our Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP) to help him find a job in security. Ryan reached out to HVRP employer/partner, DPI Security and discussed Cedric’s qualifications and background with their Human Resources Manager. They agreed Cedric would be a great candidate for the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) program; and upon successful completion of the program, he’d be a viable hire. Approximately three weeks later, Cedric completed his DPSST training (which our program paid for) and was hired as a security guard with DPI Security. Cedric is working full-time, earning $16 an hour, and doing something that he enjoys while giving back to his community.

Summary

Due to a collaborative effort between the Veteran's Association, our Supportive Services for Veteran Families program, our Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program, and DPI Security, we were able to help Cedric get back into a stable home, a stable job, and promising future. We are so proud of the success that Cedric has built after gaining access to the appropriate resources. Way to go, Cedric!
